Peacock AVOD: what is it and how does it work?

With the dizzying consumption of OTT television streaming services, the appearance of new AVOD platforms on the market is not surprising. One such platform is Peacock, which offers a different mode of broadcasting multimedia content.

The Peacock video-on-demand streaming service from NBCUniversal has reached more than 54 million subscriptions since its launch date on July 15, 2020, making it one of the best AVOD options with quality original content.

What is Peacock AVOD?

Peacock is an American AVOD (free content delivery model over the Internet) service from NBC Universal. It soft-launched on July 15, 2020, for Comcast customers, who were given free access to Peacock Premium services.

As with many platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ that preceded it, Peacock hopes to hook audiences with a particular recipe for TV shows and movies, under a futuristic vision of television.

For consumers that don’t know which service to use because so much competition from streaming services affects their ability to choose, Peacock is looking to entice them with a difficult-to-beat free option. Unlike other AVOD services, such as Tubi and Pluto TV, Peacock has a large amount of original content.

How does Peacock AVOD work?

This service actually works under a hybrid AVOD/SVOD model, which allows it to actively increase subscriptions. Initially, Peacock was underestimated, and didn’t make it into the headlines as much as other platforms like HBO Max, but by using a quality AVOD strategy it exceeded all metrics .

Peacock operates under a three-tier system, at the top of which is its Premium Plus ad-free subscription service, followed by its really great Free and Premium ad-supported alternatives..

Unlike other AVOD platforms, Peacock offers about two-thirds of its catalog for free, with more than 20,000 hours of programming for anyone to stream in the US, as long as they are willing to watch the ads.

Overall, the Peacock platform delivered solid revenues during its first quarter launch, beating analyst expectations. It has shown how to harness exclusive content like Netflix, Disney Plus and HBO Max, and tack on a free option under an advertising model.

Peacock is considered a next generation streaming network, in an era where subscription services have overtaken the world population, requiring a new approach. Such is the confidence of NBCUniversal in this model, that Peacock’s free stream is looking surprisingly strong for the future.
